I received a mailing from AARP encouraging me to renew my membership and receive a FREE Travel Bag.

I called AARP to find out when my membership expired, and was told in two years. I asked them why I had received this misleading mailing, leading me to believe it was time to renew my membership, and was told they want all of their subscribers to have the opportunity to get the FREE Travel Bag.

I stated that this mailing was bordering on fraudulent, since most people will not call to check and see when their membership expires, and will believe that it is time to renew, thereby generating lots and lots of subscription money paid to AARP that didn't have to be paid.

They noted the complaint and said they would take me off the list to be notified for membership renewal. I said they are supposed to be the watchdog for the senior citizens, and shouldn't be tricking the elderly into sending in money that isn't due.

Didn't get anywhere with them but will not renew my subscription in two years when it is up.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

I was thinking about joining. I probably won't now. They should be reported to the Attorney General.

It says right on your card when it expires

Thank you for all your input - my decision is not to join.

I just received a renewal 'by October 31 2015.'

I checked my records and my membership is not due for another four years.

I knew when I joined that AARP is more of an insurance company than any support for older persons. I still joined.

But B.S. like this makes it unlikely I will ever renew, ever.

They should be goverment siezed liquidated and those responsible jailed for fraud.. put the monies siezed to truly work for the elderly as a refund evenly divided for all elderly americans.. it may come out to a dollar or two but it would actually do some good rather than only doing very good for a very few people who work there..

I just noticed my mother had been paying AARP $10 a month. I looked at the new "bill" and it looks just like a bill, tops states RNEWAL in large bold letters.

Next to the amount, in very small print, it says "Voluntary Renewal Fee".

The address is a legitimate AARP address. This from an organization that is supposed to protect seniors from fraud.

I thought I typed my complaint right, I just reread it, what I meant to say was I told AARP that I did NOT change my login info, why would I change it with something I would NOT remember, then they kept arguing with me. This is Twice they changed my login info without my knowledge making it impossible for me to login to my own account without having to call them to find they put in THEIR password, which how would I know their password.

Identity Theft?, a thought with AARP. I guess its NOT impossible for it to happen with AARP, but they sure go out of their way to defend their company. And the travel bag? are you kidding?

it's no bigger than my wallet. A travel bad is a travel bag, that you travel with like a tote bag or backpack, that you put cloths, in a water bottle, maybe shoe or sandals etc. Big enough TO travel with. This thing was like my wallet!

Can't put anything in a wallet other than cards.

Travel requires a bag to put your essentials in and go travel. When you put a comment in they should at least allow for editing when you hit the wrong key(s)

I wondered about AARP and how others faired with their program, now I see. Not surprising.

What I found Twice was the Jeannette Phillips kept changing my password on me without my permission which made me think, Identity Theft with AARP? Then when I talk to a guy or anyone, they took me around a merriground yet saying, they didnt do anything with my account. They tried to tell me I changed it. I told them I did NOT such thing.

But they guys keep telling me I did it, yeah, sure I change my own login with something I would never remember. seriously. WHAT IS going on with AARP?

Are they what they claim to be and why would they tamper with my login information. :?

Subscribed for the first time to AARP, and they had a travel bad with wheels. What I received was a small say a camera bag, of low quality.

What bothers me the most is that bait and switch only starts off this relationship in my eyes as moving forward won't trust them.

Will not even think about any products they have, because if this is how it starts can never trust an organization like that. No renewal here...

The AARP mailing was fine. They have the right of make offers to people, and each person should know when their own membership expires.

Many (like me) would renew early just to get the free item anyway. Personally I do want to find that free bag offer and renew even though my membership doesn't expire yet.

If this person got so upset over that AARP mailing, I think something else is going on. There is no reason to be that upset over one mailing or to have caused such a fuss.

Renew early ? so, if you paid for 5 yrs, the next yr got a renewal notice, that's all good ?

Uh, don't think its going to extend you out to 5 again.. fraud and scam

Guest

Why would you call AARP to find your expiration date; itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs right on the front of your ID card. The offer does not say your subscription is up for renewal. It simply says you get a free bag if you want to renew.

Might you be having a senior moment?

What a shame. Nobody has any morals anymore.

If I receive any mailings from those crooks I'll toss them straight into the trash. Thanks for the heads up.
