Shame on you

My mother called to change her address since she was told she has 6 months to live and she needed to move in with me (her daughter) we are selling her house and AARP canceled her insurance since the home is up for sale. This is the last thing I need to deal with while trying to make my mother comfortable in her last days with me. Unbelievable.

They sell their membership lists and the junk mail won't stop

Updated by user Feb 05, 2019

Despite numerous assurances from AARP management, the junk from United Health Care will not stop. Got more today.

Original review Jan 24, 2019
I joined AARP years ago but about a year ago, I started to receive a ton of junk Medicare calls, mailings, email, etc. I am NOT eligible for Medicare.

I also received life insurance, auto insurance, and health insurance junk mail. It took me a little while to figure out the source. When I discovered it, I contacted AARP in June. I canceled my membership and asked to be removed from all lists, mailings, etc.

It didn't stop. I contacted each insurance company and asked them to stop. I signed up for the FTC OPT OUT program. I am to receive no insurance mailings.

The worst offender has been AARP and United Health Care. I have been contacting both for SEVEN MONTHS, asking to be removed. It didn't stop. Today, I was told by an AARP rep that the form had not been filed until TWO WEEKS AGO.

It took them seven months to honor the no contact. They still told me it would take many more months to get it to stop. I have called every 2 weeks, I have messaged, I have emailed.

When the federal government reopens, I intend to file an official complaint about the violation. This is a clear violation of the no contact rule.

Worse insurance company!

I had roof damage from a hail storm, the company was very difficult to deal with. They sent a claim person from Hancock to check out the damage, because they contract out to other companies.

The man came hours after the quoted time, and my contractor waited over an hour for this person to come. Their guy came 3 hours later without even notifying us to say he was running late. Then, they said they were sending another specialist to check it out, it ended up being a few months for them to tell me they didn’t feel it was hail damage, and they weren’t paying anything towards the roof, yet my whole neighborhood had roof and siding damage. Personally, I didn’t care whether they did or didn’t, I just wanted an answer, and couldn’t get them to do their job.

You can’t even get them to return a call. In my opinion they are a lousy company to do business with. I did replace the roof at my own expense, and I have left the company, which I had homeowners and my car insurance with them, and I also pay less and have better coverage with the company I’m with now. I have read many negative reviews after the fact.

I’d advise people to read these reviews before going with this company.

I warn seniors all the time about this company. I would never use this company ever again.

AARP is a total rip-off

AARP is a total rip-off, no tangible benefit and nothing but trouble for your membership. I joined primarily out of curiosity; the annual fee is cheap enough: but what I got was: 1.A worthless magazine full of rip-off advertisements 2.Put on endless mailing lists for all sorts of things I don’t want: medical devices, mortgage loans, insurance, overpriced travel, etc. I receive AARP junk mail literally every day now! 3.Worthless discounts on a variety of products and services; a simple internet search reveals better deals in many other vendors. Overall a useless program designed to rip-off it’s members in every way, they even auto-renew your membership without asking then refuse to reimburse you when cancelled!

Late Billing

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Each year AARP/UHC bills come later and later. Two people in the same household, same coverage, bills come from two different processing centers, and are received two (or more) weeks apart. Bills used to be received with at least two weeks to pay. Now bills are arriving less than 7, and in several cases the day they are due. And since it takes 3 to 5 days for a payment to be processed, it is a physical impossibility to pay the premium on time. Repeated complaints to AARP/UHC resulted in stock response, "It's not our fault." Followed with "Not having the bill on time is irrelevant," and a hard sell for automated withdrawal of the premium. Demands to pay a bill without having one in hand is unreasonable. If their computers don't have the premium as due because the bill hasn't been processed, it CANNOT be paid either online, by phone, or even by their representatives. Processing of a bill so that it arrives in a timely manner is AARP/UHC responsibility. Not that of the consumer.

Rude Reviewer

The tax Preparers were nice but when we got the final review of their work, we hadn't been told that we would have to pull all our documents out again. The documents had been put out of order by the tax preparer so it took me awhile to get wach of them out. The reviewer kept repeating himself, telling me he needed the document each time. I told him it was going to take more time to find it because it's not in order. This kept repeating itself each time he requested a document. He was very impatient and unfriendly. I was very stressed by the time everything was completed. Instead of sending the completed returns to the printer so we would have a copy, he went to lunch. The tax preparer had to get the stuff printed. That reviewer shouldn't work with people.

AARP TAX PERPARER

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

On Feb 28, 2019 I had an terrible experience with AARP in Memphis, Tn. at The Benjamin Hooks Central Library 3030 Poplar Ave. Memphis, Tn. 38111

To pick up the rest of my tax papers that wasn’t with all other forms. My tax was prepared the early part of this month. Realize I had some missing paper that shows my schedules used to prepare my taxes. I asked Mrs. Pat Bryant for the rest of my forms, she stated that she cannot give me any of the other forms. But she will be happy to go over my information with me. But I can’t have my own personal information that belongs to me. Mrs. Pat Bryant was very rude and wasn’t friendly at all. Poor poor customer service skills. I’ve never had his to happen to me before, I filed with various of tax preparer in my life time. Never was I only given part of my forms. ITS MY PERSONAL INFORMATION. I HAVE A RIGHT TO MY OWN INFORMATION! This was my first time with AARP and last time.

Something doesn’t sit well in my spirit with AARP. Come to find out my taxes was almost 500.00 short. Wasn’t prepared correctly or this company is full of SCAM. Poor customer service. You’re to help people not hurt.

Someone needs to investigate this company ASAP!

Somethings will be revealed!

Bad business! I will get to the bottom of this!! Yes I will

AARP Membership Benefits

Hello, my name is Dejesus Malave membership #305534****. My wife and I joined AARP in November of 2018.

We thought it was a no brainer especially with the incentive of membership benefits. I contacted AARP to enroll in the roadside assistance . They transferred me to the Allstate group which handles roadside assistance for AARP.

I was told by the representative that unless I had a US address that she was unable to sell me the roadside assistance? Puerto Rico is a part of the US.

No where in your membership materials does it distinguish a difference of benefits between PR and US. I have been an advocate of AARP on the island especially after the hurricane. I need a response with a definitive answer as to why this is a problem. You do not sell a product to a consumer on which you cannot deliver.

Please respond as this does not sit well with my wife and I. I look forward to your response.

Forget about getting roadside assistance thru AARP via Allstate. Instead, for reasonable and, above all reliable service contact AAA.

They have an office in San Juan and perhaps others on the island and the address is: 654 Munoz Rivera Avenue Ste 1119 Hato Rey, PR 00918 Phone (787) 620-**** In my experience, AARP is not worth the money and certainly not worth the voluminous flow of junk mail, emails and such from them trying to sell you something, usually insurance of some sort. Try AAA for your immediate problem regarding roadside assistance.

AARP AND HARTFORD INSURANCE RIP-OFF

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I was a member of AARP for over 7 years and I finally realized there is no benefit to membership with this organization and stopped listening to their propaganda . I bought Homeowners and Auto Insurance through Hartford Insurance in 2016. I was quoted and receiving a lower premium rate for 9 months and the premium increased. Since that time premiums have quadrupled the amount for both homeowners and auto!!. Also, Hartford Insurance took it upon themselves to reduce my auto insurance to just LIABILITY with no discussion and nothing informing me this was being done. When I contacted Hartford customer service asking how this could happen she said "weird, I can look for some discounts for you but to include full auto coverage this will be an additional $333.00 annually. I told her the Hartford is really doing a disservice to Seniors and the disabled because being on fixed incomes we are being priced out because we can't afford the extremely high insurance premiums so I am FORCED to shop for another home and auto insurance company. What makes it worse is AARP is the facilitator for Hartford to rip-off seniors and the disabled. The AARP doesn't care or want to assist seniors regarding this or know about how bad it is. The proof is on their customer service complaint website stating: " If you have questions or concerns specifically about an AARP co-branded product, we recommend that you contact AARP’s providers directly." AARP should not promote third party vendors when hey know they are doing a disservice to seniors, it's one of the largest lobbies for seniors and is just collecting extreme amounts in membership fees and getting fatter and fatter financially with no real help for seniors with homeowners and auto insurance needs and using celebrities to promote them....should be ashamed. Thank God I'm no longer a member.

I agree, AARP has a responsibility to monitor vendors with whom they "Cobrand" and use their influence to assist in resolving complaints. My experience is that they do not, and this website should be required reading for all of their Board Members.

had auto ins, from the rip off Hartford at aarp. great discount for 3 years then they raised my policy over 300 dollars , next year raised again over 340 dollars, no tickets no moving violations nothing , there reasons were across the board in my state all ins, were raised all 100 percent B S.

They take advantage of older people on fixed incomes and always will. I have several friends after showing them my saved paperwork from these [ *** they also have dropped there Hartford auto ins, since then I looked into 5 ins groups all were cheaper and went with State Farm and save 675.00 each year now , And You Should Too.

HIGHER INSURNACE RATES THAN ANYONE!

I have gotten quotes for insurance on 3 occasions from an AARP provider. The most recent - on April 19, 2019. the auto quote - exact same policy -- was $650 higher -- or about 80% higher - than what I am paying now. AARP creates an illusion of savings for seniors - but is not true. Be sure to shop around carefully -- I have NEVER found AARP providers to be competitive. They are the MSOT HIGHEST PRICED of any alternatives. Very sad that seniors are being taken advantage of in this way.

Scammed I think by Hartford/Sentinel Auto Ins. need help

Sharon Curtis (11/27/1949)

4101 Parklawn Avenue 327

Edina, Minnesota 55435-**** Feb. 11, 2019

55-PHL518058 (first)

55-PHB464894 (second) with an Explanation

To Whom This May Concern:

Because AARP is in front of company name Hartford/Sentinel auto insurance I am notifying that I believe I'm being scammed by this company. Apparently Hartford/Sentinel is having financial difficulties and I have no one else to turn to for help. I am Sharon Curtis, from Edina Minnesota and I've had a policy when first started the company in year 2011 as being; 55-PHL518058. However, in 2016 I was told there was a glitch in Hartford's computer and changed my policy number to 55-PHB464894. I complained but without result. Then my payment rate increased as well. I asked why. I was told by an agent that because there was a number of accidents and medical claims in Minnesota I had to pay an additional $200.00 difference for these strangers in MN, although I had NO-ZERO accidents or tickets of my own.

In March 2016-17, I was paying around 38.52 for 11 months because I gave plus $200.00 to bring my monthly payments down to 38.52 (total of 623.72 that year).

Then in the next year March 2018 to 2019, (with this new policy number 55-PHB464894) I was quoted a monthly payment of 71.00 (total year would have been 862.00) i.e., a $238.00 difference from last year (623.72).

In order to bring my monthly payment down from 71.00 I even paid out in advance in March 2018 $220.00, only to be tricked. Payments changed for the year 2018-19 as (March $220.00, Apr.59.40, May and June 61.86, and 8 months July 2018 to 2019 Feb. 4 for 59.11: a total of 852.00 to 876.00. I paid $24.00 more than originally.

Then for 2019, I received a quote for 851.00 in my email account, but in the mail I received a quote for 2019 as $977.00. It will be $100.00 more difference.

My 2005 Buick is not even worth $800.00.

My policy raised from; 623.72 to 977.00; a difference of $353.28 in two years without accidents or tickets of my own. I'm sure large businesses and AARP have better things to do besides making a disabled elderly lady on least of SSID with PTSD, miserable. In addition to, I have been hospitalize twice at the Mayo clinic in recent years for a tumor, nerve pain and being stressed for various hardships.

People on FaceBook suggested I go to another company, but I know basically that all insurance companies communicate and whatever Hartford/Sentinel was quoting me they will give me the same amount without asking me my situation. Can you help me? Please...I'm at your mercy. Sincerely, Sharon Curtis

p.s. a couple of quotes may be slightly off by a dollar or two and need modification, but this is to the best of my recognition.

Asked to be off their mailing list

I have been receiving mailers from AARP for years. I called to get off their mailing list. He said since I'm not a member they have no record of me. He said in order to get off their mailing list I need to "create" a profile with them and then he will delete it! I told them I wasn't interested in being in their system and he said then you'll continue to get the mailers!

SCAM!

Signed up and was promised a free gift (trunk organizer). I NEVER got it. However they supposedly sent a travel bag twice! Haven't gotten them but I don't want them! I did want the trunk organizer. All I get is advertisements and junk mail! I filled out several with promises of other gifts. NO gifts but more advertisements! This is another scam that targets senior citizens! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!
